We recently purchased a home and our coffee table doesn't really match (I bought it clearance at Ashley, it did not have a matching end table). The living room is a little smaller too, and I'm thinking about just doing away with it to open up the space. Is it sacreligious not to have a coffee table? Perhaps I should just buy a smaller one that won't take up so much room...with a matching end table this time, but money is tight since we are also getting married in a month.

I have not had a coffee table anywhere - living room or family room - in decades.

We do not miss them at all.

I got rid of mine at least 20 years ago. The only thing I found it useful for was keeping my legs bruised - I was forever bumping into it. It's not a sacrilege not to have one - it's your space to put anything you want in it. Things don't have to necessarily match. Why do you think it was at the store on clearance with no matching pieces - nobody wanted it!!!

We have one, and it gets a bit of use. We have a large living room so we keep the coffee table a bit further away from the sofa so there's plenty of room to get around without bumping into it. However, I put those teflon furniture glides on the bottom, so it's practically effortless to slide it up closer if someone is drinking coffee or whatever and needs a place to sit their cup down.

We have a very small bench style table in our sitting room which is not used on a daily basis. In our tv room we have storage cubes which are very easy to move and make great little table, ottomans or even an extra place to sit. The rooms in my home are small so I appreciate multifunction furniture.

If you don't want it don't use it, there is no law that says one must have a coffee table in the living room.

It is a good thing we don't follow any trend or decorating guidelines our home would be on the cover of
"Decorating disasters of the year" 1st place.

We have what we like and use what we have, it is that simple. Hardly anything matches and we just don't care. Furniture is to be used, practical and comfortable.

Will people be sitting on the middle of the sofa drinking coffee or other beverages? If not, why worry about it. We are thinking about changing out living room into a game room with pool table because we rarely have anyone in there, it's always the family room-kitchen for guests and parties.

It's better option to put that table away from the room as lot of furniture item create disturbance instead of comfy.

I look at it in light of "Do I need a table here in order to be comfortable?" rather than "Would it be weird not to have one?"

We moved and our coffee table was too big, so we bought a cocktail ottoman instead. I love it because I love to put my feet up, so it works well for that. It holds a drink because we can put a tray on top of it. Also, it doubles as extra seating if we have a large crowd. Here it is:

It is SOOOOO comfortable.

By the way, as far as matching tables go - there is no rule. They don't have to match. Be brave! None of my occasional tables match. See

Wooden table to the left of the sofa, holding books. Metal nesting tables to the right. Small carved table beside chair in front of the picture. Leather ottoman in center. Painted table under window. (I've moved that lamp by the way - too many lamps!)
