If you chose a new door, be mindful of the style of your house. One of my (many) idiosyncrasies is that I hate it when people put, for example, a swirly, art nouveau beveled glass door on a modern house, or vice versa.

So far I have checked Lowes to see what they offer and they are running $800 and up. Any suggestions?
Keep the old door! Don't get rid of it. Have it refinished if you don't feel you can do the job. You don't have to have it refinished, just have it get a good paint job. See if you can have the door hardware refinished and possibly rebuilt as well, if is the same age as the door.

This is the thing about old houses. You have to maintain the good old stuff, and sometimes it is harder to do than to buy new.

It is also possible that your door is a non standard size. But unless the door is pretty much trash, I'd try to preserve it. A new door won't look nearly as appropriate as the old one.

Call around to architectural salvage yards. They should know someone who can do the work.
