IDK... if the stuff is mass-produced and selling in national chain stores, how is it different?

If I want something unique, I buy local, from a local craftsman or artist.

Well variety? Where I live all furniture stores sell the exact same thing / exact same style (rooms to go, ashley furniture )

We had a BoConcept store open up in our area in the last two years or so.

Modern Furniture - Contemporary Furniture - BoConcept

Interesting stuff, a step up from Ikea maybe.

I agree. You won't find any unique artwork at Target, maybe different from another big box store, but if you want different and unique, look at local galleries, art shows or craft fairs. It will be more special and meaningful to you.

I agree that if it's in a chain store, it's not REALLY all that unique, but one store I really like, for pulling together several objects for a unique look, is Pier 1.

You can also find some cool stuff at World Market sometimes.

Pulaski makes some occasional pieces that are really attractive and unique - some furniture stores carry that line and it's not that expensive.

The best, most unique finds I have in my house came from antique and resale shops, however.

I agree about buying from artisans. To add individuality to my home I buy vintage and occasionally handmade from the maker.
