Are there any "portable" (i.e., not attached to the furnace) humidifiers that don't spew out the white dust when using non-distilled water? We used to have a Holmes, but the dust drove me nuts, and I'm too cheap to use distilled water all the time.

Use a wick-type humidifier and you won't get any white mineral dust.

The one I posted isn't ionic and doesn't have the dust issue. I've been really happy with it. I love that it doesn't just run because there is water in there. You can set the humidity level you want and it keeps it at that level. I only have to add water a couple times a week because of that.

Thanks. I bought a similar product at Lowes and it worked, but I felt weird about having some chemical vaporized and then breathing in the air. However, it's certainly cheaper than buying more filters!

We had a Kenmore brand portable humidifier and the filters needed to be changed way too often and they were fairly expensive (our water is hard). It also had to be refilled several times a day - so do consider how expensive the filters are and what the capacity (water) is - the smaller the water tank, the more often you have to refill the unit.

We finally had a steam whole house humidifier installed - Heaven.
