They come in a variety of sizes and are sturdy and cheap. What's more, I have had them in a very French New Orleans home, a California ranch, and various urban apartments with a variety of decor-- they work everywhere because they are very unobtrusive. Buy a few, stick them up against one another, throw some books on them and they look fabulous.
So what are your favorite cheapie finds? Things that are sturdy and well made, mass manufactured, and work in a bunch of settings?
I very much like my tall column paper floor lamps from Ikea. Would like to replace them something more substantial but just like these so much more than I should.
I love the end tables I got at Pier 1 on clearance for $99 each - THEN I realized that a leg was "broken" (missing a nut and bolt) and I got another 25 percent off of that one. LOVE THEM.
Pier 1 is sort of an aphrodisiac to me anyway...but the cheaper the better, huh? LOL
I once got a table from Pottery Barn - one of those sturdy pine rectangular dining tables. They were using it for a floor model and something scratched up the top. Asked if they were willing to sell it to me. The manager said he would and when I asked how much, he said "is $20 okay?" SOLD. The scratches were superficial and a light sand with a quick application of satin poly made it like new.
I always find furniture pieces that are damaged at 60-70% off; repair, refinish, and sell for a tighty sum.
And if you get Ballard's mail order catalog you know their stuff ain't cheap.
There's also a Frontgate clearance/outlet, I sometimes get lucky there- but they're proud of their overpriced S#!T, even when it's damaged!
You know ... The only pieces of furniture I've ever bought new are my sofa and mattress. Everything else has been a thrift store, garage sale, or auction find.

That's a find. Ballard's is most definitely NOT inexpensive. Wish I had an outlet near me.
My dining room set--bought it from a family friend that was downsizing for $250...at least 100 years old, ornate pedestal table with 6 chairs. I've seen similar tables on online auction sites for $10,000 .
Hmmm. Well I own two black office chairs from Office Depot. When I was redecorating my family room I ran out of money. I needed a pair of chairs to place on either side of a fireplace. I found them for $100 each and I still own them. They are sort of like these: Black Leather Office Side Chair @ SpaSalon.us Mine are surprisingly comfy.
I think my favorite and best cheap find was a 3 piece set from Brylane homes years ago. It was a nice sized bakers rake, a small side board and a 17 bottle wine rack; all for about $100.00. We still have the bakers rake and the wine rack. They are cheap wroght iron but have held up well. The bakers rake is in our entry way and the wine rack our dining room.
