What type of kitchen table? (counter, painting, cabinets, maple)

What about a lighter wood table? I kind of envisioned something like this (typing in the lighter tones of the butcher block and providing a nicer contrast vs the darker floors):
My other thought was something with a lighter wood top but with simple, contemporary parson style legs in a darker metal. Kind of pulls in the darkness of the floor but the wood of the butcher block and then your linens could tie in the lightness of the counters:
Both of these tables (from Crate & Barrel) are very versatile and work great with various benches, chairs, etc. (mismatched or like).
I would still go for a farm style table but I don't think I'd go with the white legs and butcher block top even though I love that look. I just think it would be too much of the same. I would choose a painted table. Maybe a little on the "shabby chic" style.
I like the idea of a painted, distressed farmhouse table myself, with four chairs in a natural wood color similar to the butcher block color, and two chairs like the wicker ones from the last picture in the OP. Those come from Pier 1, I believe, and they are BADASS and comfortable too!
I love all of the ideas everyone shared! You guys have great taste and seem to understand my eclectic style. I would be happy with any of the ones you posted pictures of here. I showed my husband, and he doesn't like the distressed chipping paint look. That's okay though. I could have color without distressed. Or I could do distressed anyway. He really doesn't care and simply gives me opinions I don't really have to follow.
It really comes down to finding the right table. If I stumble upon any of the ones you all posted for a good price, I'll snatch it up in a second.
I also looked online at how to build farm tables. There's a guy in my city who posts ones he builds on Craig's List. We could do better. I told hubby we should start building them. Since he's not inspired, I'd have to start doing it myself. Then he'd be inspired to get involved. Anytime he's dragging his feet about getting a project done, I buy the materials and start trying to do it myself and he always takes over. I've learned how to use that personality trait to my advantage.
I'd mainly like a custom narrow table. I want something that is small, like 5' long, to put up against the wall most of the time. I don't want to walk around a table in the middle of the kitchen. But I'd like it to extend long for big farm table gatherings. Since I hate cracks in the middle of a table for extensions, I'd like the extensions on the ends. They don't even have to store in the table. Since my dream table is beyond our carpentry skills and I won't likely want to pay what it would cost to be custom made, I'll continue my search for a cool table like any of the ones posted here.
This was a great brainstorm thread! Thank you so much! You guys rock!
You could go with a white table and red chairs. Or a wood table and red chairs. I am suggesting red chairs because you chose some red possibilities yourself, and because I have had an antique round oak table with new red chairs and it looked great.
This brand might be sold locally in your area. I can vouch for the quality of the chairs, and I assume the tables are as well made. And you can choose finishes and/or colors.
Don't forget to post a picture of what you settle on.
