I have a bathroom that I will be remodeling. There is original tile on the walls that will be coming down that is about 3/4 of an inch thick (its too damaged to keep). The bathroom has a door into my bedroom and construction is estimated to last about 2-3 weeks.

How awful will this be in terms of dust and noise? The crew will work during the day while I am at work, but I am just wondering if I should fully vacate for a while.

They should make a dust tent with plastic so the dust should not be so bad. The biggest concern will be not having a bathroom for 2 to 3 weeks. If you can fully vacate, then I would.

That was not an option.

" Bathroom remodel-- how painful is it? "

If you were doing it yourself and had no prior experience- it's physically, mentally, and financially painful.

If you were doing it yourself and had prior experience- it's physically and financially painful.

If you are having someone else do it- you can remove the physical part; but the other symptoms still apply!

If you are having someone else do it when you are more than capable of doing it yourself- its not painful at all- it's rather enjoyable! Except when the bill comes!!!

I don't know, I think it is also your own attitude about it and how well you roll with things. If I had another bathroom in the house I would be fine with it. Additionally, I would want to know from the contractors if they planned to tent the area and how you could expect to find it when you got home. IF they don't tent at least close the door to keep the dust down to a minimum.

I had a guy reno my bathroom years ago on LI and he told me that he would sweep the floor every night and tidy his tools before he left. He was so sweet and said it showed a sign of respect for his homeowner. He did a great job and was as neat as a pin too.

If it's your only bathroom, you should vacate. But go there daily to check progress.

Is this in the 1920s building you discussed in another thread?

I am on my 3rd bathroom remodel and it hasn't been painful at all. My contractor has always cleaned up the mess daily. They already completely gutted the room and it took less than a day for them to do that.

Yes indeedy.

My building has guest suites you can use if you reserve them, so I was thinking about moving in to one of those. If I get the bath and kitchen done at the same time it will be a necessity.

The main reason I asked is that remodeling OLD bathrooms is a VERY different story.

Removing that old tile could get super messy since the materials and workmanship were different and often more involved than what we use today.

The homes in my neighborhood are from the 1960s-1970s, but even from that age remodeling was a chore. It took my neighbor's tile guy two days to hammer through and remove the tile and old wire backing they used.

Just expect delays, surprises and a bigger mess with an older bathroom.
