Yes, you did a good job

My kitchen table & fireplace/den area is oriented pretty much the same as yours, EXCEPT.....even though there's practically an entire wall of windows across the back wall, our "brilliant" builder put the door to the patio right about where your Christmas tree is . So yes, it's right next to the fireplace. Since we do like to enjoy our patio, and have a little doggie who goes out to our fenced backyard, we open the door ALL the time. So we can't even cozy a chair up to that side of the fireplace. It's wrong on so many levels! I can't wait until we are able to sell & buy another!

How cozy! LOL

FWIW, this one was built in the 1950's - so it's not just a recent phenomenon.

I love them. They're common in mid-century ranch houses in Southern California. (Think classic Palm Springs. Mkarch's photo is very typical.)

They're also common in homes with Pueblo-style architecture.

They SUCK!
There, I said it.

And of all the different plans I've built over the years only one had a corner f/pl.; it actually worked for this particular plan (3/2 ranch, open plan), because of the other walls/windows. But for almost all other plans- No Bueno!

I'm over fireplaces altogether. I've lived with them for 55 years and would rather have something else instead. Even though I enjoy the ambiance around the holidays for a couple hours here and there it is a space waste IMO. In fact I've fantasized about tearing down the wall my fp lives on and replacing it with a huge picture window to bring some much needed natural light into my living room!
