if you are in Chicago area check out Etsy.com site and look for furniture table handmade

there is company there that is making some neat furniture with reclaimed wood--
would be expensive to have it shipped to me but if you are there take advantage of it...

I agree about Pottery Barn. In the Chicago area there should be a good store, with possibly a table for you to look at.

The idea about having a table custom made for you is not a bad one. When we needed a fine work worker to repair some furniture, we got a reference from Angie's List. He did good work.

Ana White | Build a Farmhouse Table - Updated Pocket Hole Plans | Free and Easy DIY Project and Furniture Plans

This is a site for plans for hand made furniture. You could have a woodworker make one for you using these plans, perhaps?

Good luck!

Thanks to all for the great suggestions.

We have been looking at both Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware, online and B&M.
Both stores didn't stock all the tables you see online.
Or they had the table but no chairs to try out.

We did take drives to furniture stores within a certain radius.
Lots of the stores where hit and miss.

We ended up going to Steinhafel's and buying our set there.
It was custom so now we wait our 8-10 weeks for delivery.

Thanks again to all for your help.
