I'm starting to look at homes available in the area I will be retiring to. Most of the homes are 3 -4 bedrooms or 3 bedrooms plus a bonus room over the garage. So I'm looking for ideas on what to do with the extra rooms. There would be a Master bedroom and 1 bedroom will be reserved for guests. The question is what to do with the other rooms. I don't need or want a home office and don't have a hobby that requires a lot of room. I'm thinking home gym/yoga for 1 room, but welcome your suggestions.

???
Instead, buy a house that suits your needs! No sense spending the extra money when you don't seem to need the space.

The 2 bedroom places aren't in the neighborhoods that I want to live in, and don't have the other amenities (large kitchen, great room) that I want. Also resale on 2 bedroom homes are not as good.

Fair enough!

How about a wine room, a media room or a library?

I've always wanted one room with nothing but pillows and books.

I would like a greenhouse room, conservatory (?) I love plants and stuff like that where I can start seeds and watch them grow....
and sit and read a book on a chase lounge surrounded by quiet and greenery......

6-Step Guide to Renting Out a Room in Your House

Personally, I have never done the aforementioned but I know a woman who does and it makes not only her mortgage payment every month but her utilities and a bit extra every month.

Simple: A HUGE walk-in closet!

I turned one of my extra rooms into a china closet. Being the last in the family I inherited all the good stuff. No china cabinet could accommodate my treasures.......so...I had cabinets installed on all four walls of the smaller bedroom. Problem solved.

If its more house than you need, then it's more house than you need- regardless of location!

Frugality is king when retiring, am I correct? If so, why spend more than you have too, pay taxes on more than you want/need, or insurance for that matter? Maybe you should reconsider-
Besides, if resale is not good for two bdrms then all the better for you as a buyer! And, as a general rule you never loose money on real estate- but you maynot make money either.

Find some more hobbies that require a lot of time/space.

Personally, I would make a game room if I had an extra room.
