About to start renovating an apartment I have: opinions on whether to keep the picture rails?

Also I plan to buy complete new furniture but am confused on how to layout. are there any good guides online? I have no idea how to make the tv work with furniture for the lounge

Those are awfully high to display art... Are they picture rails? They look more like display shelving to me.

If you have a collection you want on display, keep them.
If not, and if your landlord allows you, take them down.

Looks like you have two walls that would be okay for the TV.

Id keep them.... not seen rails or shelving like that for a long time... looks a nice house.

I don't know what your budget is, but if you can afford a cabinet that the TV moves down inside and then moves back up when you want to watch it that would be what I would do. Otherwise, it is going to be difficult to NOT have your TV the focal point of the room (unless that is what you want). Those cabinets are pretty narrow for flat screen TVs. so it won't take up a bunch of floor space.

I hope you are not talking about the OP's picture... that is not a picture rail.

A picture rail is a strip of molding from which you suspend pictures.
Google images will show you plenty.

I love the rails. Keep them. It's a nice room.

I'd put the TV along the wall that has the door and a sofa across from it on the long wall without windows or doors. You can place a chair and table or a credenza or hall table under the window.

The OP's rails aren't as high up as the picture Kaydkayd posted. (Love the glass bottles though.)

It can be used for pictures. Here's an example.

What I posted was a Plate Rail. Do a google search and see what they look like, pretty similar. They can be anywhere from 3/4 up the wall, to off the top of the windows and doors like the OP has. Your room might have originally been a dining room. Yes I would keep them as well, they have a nice architectural detail.
