I need some creative, but cheap ideas for how to put up a ton of family 4x6 photos. I want them all together in one area, I'm talking tons of photos, but buying individual frames would be costly and keeping them all straight on the wall would be impossible. Any alternatives?
I have not seen a successful photo wall using 4x6 photos. The great ones are mainly 8x10s with a few 5x7s and some 10x14s, or mainly 10x14s with a smattering of smaller ones.
I would think that images that small will not look right.... you would not be able to have one catch your eye and draw you in closer.
BTW, I have had no problem with keeping frames straight on my wall.
I've seen some interesting wall collages with smaller photos all the same size. However, most of the time, I think it comes out looking a bit cluttered. Personally, I would choose a handful of favorites and have them blown up and properly cropped to best highlight the subject in the photos.

What is your definition of "a ton of family 4x6 photos"? Is a ton 20 or 100?
IMO because you are having all of the pictures the same size, you would want to break it up with different frames. I would use frames of different shapes, sizes and colors. Also, because you are having a bunch of photos, I wouldn't want everything symmetrical or straight.
Also, as others have said, I would deviate from all the pictures being 4x6. If you have the digital copy (or negative), printing a 5x7 is only 10 cents more per picture.
Again, decorating is personal taste and it is your home so do what you want. For me, I would rather have a few special photos displayed in public areas and that is it. When I visit someone who has a ton of photos on display I tend to not "see" most of them. Sensory overload, if you will. Others will love them on display. I keep a small album of family photos nearby and if I am asked I grab it and show it off.
I guess maybe 100 photos or such. I dont want a cluttered look. But enlarging a few photos, I just dont know if I can choose that few. Plus, I don't have a lot of wall space for photos, so I thought I would pack it.
100 pix in one spot? I don't think it would look good. Not one will stand out.
Select a 2-3 dozen or so, the best of all. Put them together in different sizes, so they will catch the viewers attention.
