I grew up in a 5-1/2 bath house for two parents and four children, and that didn't spoil me from being able to share a bathroom as an adult. Our current house has too many bathrooms (and my children moved out to share bathrooms with roommates so they weren't spoiled either), but I'll be thrilled to downsize to only one bathroom. There's just no reason to have more bathrooms to clean now that our nest is empty. Everyone can share when they visit.

I grew up with 4 people and 2 bathrooms. The kids were both girls, and the hall bath had double sinks. I now have 4 people and 2.5 baths. Soon we'll have 2 full baths and 2 half baths for 4 people. They are spread over 3 floors, though. It will be nice when we have guests.

It's just my husband and me and we have 2.5 bathrooms - a big master bath and powder room downstairs and a full bath upstairs between the two guest rooms. Makes sense to me.

When I was little we lived in a house with 1 bathroom for 4 people. When I was older we lived in a 2 bathroom 3 bedroom house. I think I had an issue with it because I had to share with my brother. Lol
Our next close will have 5 br 3.5 baths for a family of three.

Growing up we had 2 bathrooms for 4 people- hardly using the downstairs though.

We currently have 1 bathroom for 5 people. No issues.

We have 2 1/2 baths in our house.

Considering our kids refuse to use their hall bath, we have more than enough. The four of us all use the master bathroom almost exclusively. The only thing my kids do in their bathroom is brush their teeth. However, I'm glad to have that hall bath for when guests come and spend the night - I wouldn't want everyone (including guests) sharing one bathroom!

There's a huge difference between (1) how many you really need, (2) how many would be nice and (3) how many it takes to satisfy some personal sense of luxury or entitlement. At the end of the day it comes down to $$$.

If you live in group 1 your house is most likely 2 bathrooms and may look like the below. things like private guest room baths or powder rooms are probably abstractions.
or

Where I live 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths are the most common by a large margin, regardless of house age or style. The setup is almost always 1 bath in master bedroom, another shared bath for a couple bedrooms and another bedroom with it's own bath (usually set up as a guest room) and then a powder room on the 1st floor. If there's a third floor (where the help used to live) then there's a bath there too. I put this arrangement - which includes my house - in group 2. Obviously nobody must have a powder room, but it is nice. Ditto the guest room bath, but that's nice too. See examples below.

or

The only group 3 houses around here with double master baths or more individual baths for respective bedrooms are McMansions of some kind or $1mio+. These are for the folks that absolutely must have their privacy, blah blah. See below.

First two homes for family of 3 had 2 bath. Then in 1960 to 3 bath. Added one more child in 63 so now family of 4. Stayed with 3 bath.
