Re-Hanging Blinds (paint, ceiling, colors, light)

Hi, all.

We bought a house a few months ago. It's a mess in a number of ways, one of which is the interior paint. The previous owners painted the house numerous times in numerous colors, and there's paint of all sorts of colors on the woodwork, window sills, and ceiling. It's going to take me an eternity to fix it.

Anyway, in our living room, we have faux-wood blinds. (Remarkably, the previous owners did not paint them!) I decided to take the blinds down to paint. Rather than painting around the brackets, I decided to remove the brackets, too. Big mistake, I think. The brackets ended up being glued to the sheetrock inside the window insets. When I pulled the brackets off, the outermost parts of the sheetrock came off with them.

So I used spackle to fill in the holes and to smooth over the missing chunks as best I could. Now, I need to rehang the blinds. I'm worried that I'm going to hit the filled-in screw-holes and all the spackle I used is going to crumble, and I'm going to be left with a bigger mess.

As I see it, my options are: 1) risk it and hope not to hit the old holes; 2) affix the brackets to the top of the window insets instead of the sides and hope that the weight of the blinds isn't too much; or 3) figure out some other way to hang the blinds.

I'm obviously no expert when it comes to this stuff. But I don't want to kill my windows. Any advice?

Slighty longer screws with mollies perhaps?

Place the bracket and mark the holes at the top (top of inset). Pre-drill holes for screws, use a 1-1/2" or 2" #10 panhead screw.

When screws are used on the top of the bracket instead of the end/side it makes putting the unit in a lot easier.
