That's better but you don't place seating between the island and counter area.

I don't think much of the countertop dining area. It becomes old very quickly... as in uncomfortable.

The second open one has a major flaw - the fridge is too far away from the other appliances. I think that would get old really, really fast. I prefer #1. BUT there's still not much counter top space. Seems you are trading out counter top space (and other storage space) for that open feel. Better really think that through and decide if you're willing to give up so much storage and counter top space.
