So, now that Halloween has come and gone, who is going all out for Christmas?
I'm already all out for Christmas! We're not hosting Thanksgiving here so I decided to get a head start on it this past weekend. I am whupped but I'm to the point now where all I have to do is sweep and vacuum all the sparklies up.
Not doing the front porch yet - I don't want to inflict Christmas on my neighbors just quite yet.

My wife and I always have a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Then after dishes are done, we pack away all the fall stuff and unload all the Christmas stuff. It looks like Thursday and Friday will be a snowy day for us, so I don't see me putting much stuff up outside. Hopefully by Sunday, I'll be able to put the lights up.

My husband's been out of town and I thought it would be a nice surprise to him to see it all up and he didn't have to help at all! I thought it would be pretty easy by myself because we have a walk in attic. What I didn't factor in is that he usually brings down all the boxes and I unload the stuff - then he lets me do my thing and then helps me sweep and vacuum afterward.
I must have walked up and down those stairs a thousand times! I was about to fall out!
He swears he's going to put up lights around the front this year. I'll believe it when I see it. He and I have a thing against ladders. Personally I'm fine with a wreath and some poinsettias (fake, of course!) in planters by the front door!
The pumpkins on the front porch are still intact. No need to start decorating for Christmas yet!
I'm trying to sell most of my outdoor Christmas stuff. I'm going minimalist -- strings of lights outlining the porch, wreath on the door, candles in the window. Done!

I completely agree. The funny thing is I have pumpkins on my front porch, fall leaves mixed with orange lights wrapping my porch, but my neighbors across the street have already put up all their outside Christmas lights. It looks strange driving down my street, it looks like it should be mid December due to snow and Christmas lights, yet there is my house still with fall decorations out. I'll swap it all out this weekend.

Outside it's still fall at my house - pumpkins and fall leafy things - but inside it's Christmas. I am ready to get rid of those pumpkins (this is a late TGiving it seems like) but I don't feel like it's appropriate to inflict Christmas on my neighbors just quite yet!
This is how my sister-in-law decorated our fireplace last year.
I have to try to redo that since she won't be here this year.
This is what it looked like on Christmas Eve after Santa arrived when the children were nestled all snug in their bed with visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.
BTW, don't worry that one of the kids was bad which is why their stocking is empty. Santa just didn't fill it before I took the pic.
In the years to come, we may have to make room for 2 more stockings if two of the grandkids ever come out from California to join us for Christmas and possibly even 2 more if one of my step-daughters marries the guy she is seeing who has 2 kids. That fireplace may be VERY crowded with stockings. lol.

DH put up our lights already. I want one of the grands to flip them on after our Thanksgiving dinner. But he has chosen lights that don't require a lot of ladder work. I asked for lights, but I also stipulated that they be easy for him to put up and take down. We chose lights more or less together. We do it to be part of the neighborhood and to delight our grands when they come over.
There will come a time when even this will be too much for us.
Inside is decorated a bit for Thanksgiving, because I am hosting this year. My kids and spouses will all be here at one time or another, and I wanted a bit of festive ornamentation. I printed off a free banner and colored it with colored pencils. I glued it to a long piece of twill tape, and hung it from the bottom of the mantel. Then I put an old sheaf of wheat that I've had for a couple of years on top of the mantel along with the other stuff I already had there. I've already done a centerpiece for the table. With centerpieces, I think less is more. I hate looking through a tall one across the table, and hate it when they take up too much table space.
At any rate, I'm doing as many chores as I can, because tomorrow, and Thanksgiving Day will be arduous. I look forward to it though.
My Thanksgiving decoration is a cardboard turkey that I hang up on the door. That is it. It actually symbolizes my Independence Day. I bought it after my first marriage ended because I WANTED to-and I didn't have to justify spending the money! So, I hang it up every year and I tell myself, "You've come a long way, Baby!" Hubby doesn't say anything because he knows that I have come a long way. (Which goes to show that I married the right person the second time around.) In fact, he hung it up for me.
Every year, I toy with the idea of an artificial tree. They are getting better looking all the time, yet I cannot seem to pull the trigger. After all the years of cutting down our trees, and enjoying the smell, and laughing at the inevitable imperfections, I am afraid I will not like an artificial tree. We built our last house in the middle of a Xmas tree farm that had never been harvested. Every year we cut down a tall evergreen, and used the top 8' as our Christmas tree. We had some real Charlie Brown trees, but they had personality.
I think my feelings are as much about being against plastic perfection vs. natural, real imperfection; the real spirit of Christmas vs the crass commercialism.
How many of you have gone fake, and are happy with your decision? Who has gone from fake, back to real?
