I don't see why you could not do different colors on different sides.

I have different colors on each side of the door going from my side door to the garage!

Do what you LIKE. It's your house, and you are living there.

Do you like brass? I do. I have brass on all of my doors.......including closets.

All the trim in my house including doors is bright white.

Then you need to know what sells in your area. You real estate agent will be a BIG help in that regard.

Personally I really dislike bright white AND I dislike brass.
Both are not very common in my area.

If you are painting to resell, match the doors to the trim around the doorways and baseboards. You want a unified look throughout the house. Wood trim around doors, and painted doors don't look right. Nor do painted trim and wood stained doors. There are always exceptions, but you are trying to appeal to the vast majority of prospective buyers.

If you have one room that has different trim around the doorway and baseboards, from the rest of the house, then I'd match the door side that faces that room to match the trim.

Brass is always OK. It is not trendy now, but it is classic.

Bright white is common here so it's like he says, you need to find out what sells in your area.

And yet you throw more money at it...
