Anybody into industrial chic? (loft, design, room, popular)

It's original use was as a drafters table back in the 50s, it is being repurposed by me as a coffee table.

This is a home furnishing product influenced by some designer's concept of a drafting table.

Here it's called an 'architect table', either as a coffee table, a desk, or a sofa/console table. Functional Furniture

Here, in a different height, it's called a 'nautical table'. Nautical Table Desk. Or here Nautical Table Desk

Look, it's nice that you've found a table you like, but I can't see a professional architect or graphic designer or engineer using a table that's only 18 inches tall.

I am a newcomer to this aesthetic, and we are about to make a bookshelf out of black pipe and flanges, with stained wood shelves.
After considering a lot of cheap looking, but expensive, bookshelves, I think this concept is really going to become a popular and cost effective alternative.
We will have a 10' long, low shelf for about $135.

I love those shelves. Will be looking of something similar for my kitchen soon.

I think that will look great - and I found low shelves are particularly hard to find, so this way, you have much more control over the size and will be able to make it fit the space better. Hope you will share a photo when you finish making yours!

Unless the pictured table is actually extendable up to desk height (and tiltable at that height) then yeah, it was never functional, but basically just captured the aesthetic.

I say this having a sibling who is an architect, and who has had numerous drafting tables.

That said, yes, he doodles on the coffee table as well, but doodling on your dining room table doesn't make it a drafting table, it makes it a dining room table you're doodling on.


As far as pipes/shelves - ballard designs has had a set like that for years. Yours is cheaper, and you'll be able to customize to exactly what you want.

We've bought one of these from ballard (clearance, thank you) and they are lovely. Our style is "transitional" (more or less traditional, but not fussy/frilly, with some cleaner/modern edges) and the bookcase looks fine in our office with our traditional "campaign" desk and built-in cabinets.

I know, right? If you can find them they're $1000+. I'll post a picture, but it will be after the holidays.

Never heard it called industrial chic before, it's always just been industrial, and old/antique/vintage industrial was a thing long before the term steampunk was coined.

Industrial has always been one of my favorite furniture/accessory styles but I like it mixed with softer styles. This table, for example, is imo wonderful but I'd pair it with farmhouse chairs and put it on a Kilim rug.

Mixing industrial with MCM should work well, too.
