In order to keep from scratching, denting hard wood floors, do we need to put area rugs underneath the furniture ( dining room table and chairs, couches, bed etc.)?
Not necessailry. We use rubber feet protectors, similar to the photos below, for the stationary furniture legs and on the bottoms of the chair legs either plastic or rubber glides attached to them to prevent scratching across the floor. There also felt pads that can be used for that purpose too.

Our beds and couches have nothing underneath and there are zero dents or scratches.
If you have denting, you have the wrong wood for a floor, IMHO!
Our dining room table and chairs have felt pads.... again, zero dents or scratches.
What witnit suggests. I've always had hardwood floors and that's what we used.
Be aware that the plastic ones that are nailed into the bottoms of dining chairs can crack or break off and that will scratch your floor if you don't notice.
Need? No. You can use the felt pads to protect the floors as others have noted. Want? Probably. Area rugs help soften the area visually and aurally and are a great way to add some color and design elements. I would personally not put under the dining room table, although some people do. But I like them in the living room, den, bedrooms where there are hardwoods.
I vote for the felt pads with adhesive on one side. We still get the occasional scratch if the felt wears down and we don't notice, but I keep a bottle of Old English scratch cover for the little whoopsies.
Not a requirement, but they certainly help to anchor spaces and "break up" huge expanses of wood. They add warmth & softness and define spaces. If we had no rug under our sofa, it would slide back a foot every time DH sat down!
