One of the major reasons I won't install any granite in any of our new homes. This is typical of what you're going to get with granite. It's a polished natural stone. Drop anything on it with any kind of acid and the polish is gone. You aren't fast enough with any cleanup to do any good. If one of my buyers insists on granite, they are given a void of warranty to the countertops, they sign it, and then I arrange for them to buy it from my supplier. They are told several times during the building process, if you have any issues with the tops, don't call me. Granite tops are a wreck waiting to happen. For the few that haven't had any issues, your day is coming.
I just wanted to see what everyone else thinks is the solution to my problems-regarding my granite countertop. Almost 1 year ago I got my granite countertops installed through Lowes. I would like to say I take pretty good care of it, I clean up spills promptly and only use safe stone cleaners and follow all of the other "dos and donts".
I've started to notice pits and small "hole's" forming All over the counter. I have attached two photos that you can see what it looks like. What would you guys recommend? Would a sealer work? For the larger pits should I invest in a quick filler to repair pits?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-M
I am so sorry, you must be heartsick about this -- I know I would be. I don't know if there's a warranty but you should definitely go raise the roof with Lowe's. I have never heard of this happening with granite. I had a granite top for five years before I sold my home -- the only problem was that it lost its shine in places. I guess I was supposed to have gotten it sealed. But back to you -- I don't see how this could be your fault. If it was something acidic that spilled, it would be in just a spot or two, not all over the place. Before you go back to Lowe's, check with an unrelated granite place and ask them what they think. Otherwise, Lowe's can just come back and blame you and you won't have any comeback.
I am not sure when my granite countertops were originally installed, but I have been living with them for near four years now. I do not do one thing that I am "supposed" to do with them and I clean them down with diluted vinegar from a spray bottle. Not one "pit" has yet to form.
..vinegar is acetic acid.
