We purchased a home 2 years ago in a quiet neighborhood that has some Cuban/Puerto Rican/Spanish influence...thus, our house had some permanent Spanish decor like the Saltillo tile we love.

While we don't mind the very light yellow walls, we feel the kitchen is washed out with pine cabinets and tan TILE countertops (which we loathe).

We want to:

- replace kitchen countertops (either quartz or granite)
- add backsplash of some sort (likely tile)
- paint the walls
- cover the large island table with quartz or granite

Any suggestions what colors (counter/wall/backsplash) would flow well with the pine cabinets and Saltillo tile flooring?

Our initial thoughts were gray counters (Zirconium quartz), keep the light yellow walls, and a turquoise-ish backsplash. We don't want it to be too loud, more relaxing but not

Any insight is appreciate because we are spinning over here!

Just Google Images- "Mexican inspired kitchens" or "Spanish inspired kitchens". Or use the word "influenced" instead of "inspired".

Or go to Houzz and search using the same descriptions.

We've done that. Coming to CD community for more suggestions after actually seeing photos of my kitchen and what I have to work with.

It's not easy to find a before and after of a kitchen that is identical to what you start with...especially in our situation where we have the Saltillo tile and pine cabinets.

I tried to find pics but didn't have much luck-

Anyway, your kitchen reminds me of a project that "This Old House" did in NM. Same tile, cabinets were custom built from Mesquite, but had that same look/feel as your pine.

You might want to consider soapstone counter tops - they have a more rustic feel. Our kitchen isn't the same style as yours but here's an example of soapstone. Soapstone isn't glossy and it has a very velvety feel. To me it looks best in farmhouse, rustic, or industrial style kitchens. It's super easy to maintain, requires no sealing, is impervious to stains, and very heat tolerant. It DOES scratch but that's part of it's charm - it develops a patina over time. If you look closely at the picture I included, you can see little scratches and nicks and personally we really like that feature of it. It's not the finish for anyone who is expecting glossy perfection or elegance, however.

Here's a kitchen posted some years back on CD:

edit to add: Here's a Mexican-influenced house with what looks like soapstone counters in the kitchen so you can get an idea of how they might look in yours. Go to picture #5:

Have you considered painting the cabinets? That would give you a lot more flexibility for your other choices.

How about a very muted green or turquoise quartz for the counters? I also like Kathryn's suggestion for soapstone.

OMG, do not paint the cabinets. They are beautiful as is.
