We painted the wall behind our sofa in the family room a dark red. It took a grey primer & 3 coats of paint. The girl at lowe's said we had to do it in a satin but I forget why. I just noticed yesterday we some how missed the third coat for about 5 feet along the top of the wall. (adds that to the honey do list) We noticed too that the blue tape will pull off the paint. I think we had it up there for a week or two until it was really dry! I'm still trying to decide if we should bring the color around to the wall where our sliding glass door & window are.
I wrote a response, and then just decided to make it a separate thread on painting tips. Graham paint is the best paint available as far as I know, but it costs a fortune.

Use a good paint. I have covered dark red wine walls with ONE COAT of Valspar! It's amazing paint! You should be able to cover a white wall with a dark color with ANY good paint unless the walls are oily or greasy for some reason...such as in a kitchen or bath....but don't buy cheap stuff.
