I would like to add a water feature to my small lanai. I want like the "babbling brook" sound, but also I was thinking of getting a vertical waterwall-type of fountain (either floor or wall-mount) with a light for visual appeal as well. They can come with glass, mirror, or slate for the water to trickle down. I had seen one in my vet's office that was made of glass and just absolutely gorgeous. The problem is, I can find them on-line but I don't know where to see any on display. Very few have reviews, but one brand sold at Home Depot has negative reviews, such as the pump is too noisy, the water flow is uneven, the light burned out, etc. I hesitate to buy something that heavy/expensive without seeing it in person. So I was wondering if any of you have something similar and if so, any recommendations?
Is this the size of a tabletop water feature or a small pond sized one?
A friend has a small koi pond in the corner of her lanai. It's concrete blocks (the ones that are 8" x 8" x 16") stacked three layers high in about a 4' square shape, but you could make it larger or smaller depending on what you want. Then there is a plastic liner and that's held in place with a layer of cap blocks. There's some decorative lava rocks, taro and ferns added around the edges, some water lilies and the fish. She has a small pump which can be turned off or on depending on if she wants to hear it or not. It sort of cascades down the lava rocks. There is some sort of water filter, too, since it is mostly an aquarium instead of a fountain. I think there's some lights in the water as well as hiding in the ferns, but those may have been added separately.
I always start backwards if I am in your position. I google image search what I am looking for, then once I see what I am looking for, I click the image and then call/email the company and then ask where they are sold etc. Not exactly what you are asking but I have done that many time and find it helpful.
Call your vet's office and ask where they got theirs - maybe whoever installed it has other types and models you can check out in person.
fwiw, I bought a small tabletop one, and it was impossible to find any in stock locally, so I had to go ahead and order online. I got my from Lamps Plus - they have a huge selection, if you do end up deciding to take a chance on ordering without seeing it in person first.
Love them. Buy every one I have seen the pump is noisier than the water so I have never gotten one. Too bad.
Hmmm, that's what I'm afraid of. I did see a website for Bluworld fountains that look like a quality product. But the 4' ones don't look like they have lights, which is a feature I wanted.
Hotzcatz, the one I was thinking of is not a tabletop or pond feature -- it is a vertical fountain that sends sheets of water down a glass panel into river rocks at the base.
It is a small lanai, though, and I'm afraid a fountain of that size may be too overwhelming for the room. So maybe a tabletop might be the better option.
If you had the right sized pump, then you could just basically make your own waterfall. They have the pumps sized according to how high you're lifting the water, which is called "head". Get a little extra since there's also a little loss of pressure from the water going through the pipes, too. Which is, not surprisingly, called "line loss". For a waterfall, especially one which is quiet the quietness of the pump matters, too. Although, if you had a sump pulling out of the water fountain, then the pump could be put in a box for more quietness.
Hmm, most waterfall pumps are underwater submersible pumps, how are they making much noise? If you weren't doing much lift, then an aquarium filter pump would do and they are pretty quiet. But, more than likely, you're looking for a pre-made sort of thing?
