Hello all. So, I'm remodeling my master bedroom & bath. It's the kind of design where the vanity/sink is open to the bedroom and then there's a door to the toilet/shower. Here's my problem. The current vanity is built-in between two side walls and (get this) is 59 1/2" wide. Consequently, I can't just rip it out and put a nice 60" vanity in the space. I was even ready to trim the typical 61" top down to 60", but it just won't fit. So, my choices are to 1. have a custom vanity built to fit the space (expensive), 2. paint the existing vanity and just buy a new top (not as nice), or 3. put a new 48" free standing vanity & 49" top in the space which would leave about 5" on each side. There would be a matching 48" mirror over it. My question is, how strange do you think this would look or do you think it would look OK? All opinions welcome.

Thanks, Mike

As you suggest it would not be ideal but you could attach a towel bar to the vanity on both sides and hang hand towels over them to take away the oops look. Alternatively the towel bars could go on the walls.

I would do #3.
A sink in the bedroom is already strange, so I would not worry about how the new one will look.

Could you cut out the drywall where a 60" cabinet would need to go, then put 1/4" drywall in its place? That assuming, of course, there's currently 1/2" drywall there now.

To clarify, the vanity is not IN the bedroom. It's a separate bathroom area, but you can see the vanity from the bedroom. Gee, on second thought, I guess it kinda IS in the bedroom...but not really. LOL

I would look at cutting into the drywall as well. Also, are you measuring the vanity top vs the cabinet? It's possible that the vanity is already set into the drywall some. Can you take a photo so we can see the vanity now? If you don't want to do that, find a vanity that looks more like furniture for the free standing option.

As for the location of the sink, some friends have a similar set-up in their master bedroom, but with a second sink in the actual bathroom area. They love the set up. It's also common in a Jack and Jill type bathroom set up.

I agree, the cost of a custom vanity is almost certainly going to be CRAZY HIGH compare to yanking out the drywall and replacing it with thinner. Heck, if need be I would plane the framing down by 3/8" on each side while the drywall is off, that'll get you a solid 3/4" of room for a nice finished look. It would be oh so UGHHHHHLY to see a 48" vanity with more than 5" of dead space on either side and if the style of this vanity is what I am thinking (my MIL has this sort of home, the master bedroom has a kind of "dressing area" / niche with clothes closet and the vanity in a hideous late 70s / early 80s style, oh I long to upgrade that...) paint alone will do nothing to improve the look.

I am not a huge of the big orange box, but when they have deals like this -- Foremost Ashburn 60 in. W x 21.50 in. D x 34 in. H Vanity Cabinet Only in Mahogany-ASGA6021D - The Home Depot it is kinda nuts not to take advantage...

We placed a standard 48" vanity in a wider space and sheetrocked it in just to vanity height. I'm happy with this result: Bathroom Vanity Opinions Needed-image.jpeg

While I think your solution did come about quite well, because it appears you went to the trouble to top the knee wall with countertop that matches the vanity, I can't help but think it would have been LESS EFFORT to rip out the existing drywall and reframe. The 5" countertops are not really useful, are they?
