Agreed. Here in Houston, I think fireplaces, particularly wood burning fireplaces, are a silly hood ornament that are nothing but a waste of space, bird habitat, and a fire hazard in themselves. Oddly enough, the expensive homes here usually have them but their occupants rarely use them, if ever. The price of firewood is ridiculous and we don't need the heater until October most years.
I would bet most expensive homes in Houston are like the expensive homes here in northeast Texas - equipped with gas fireplaces. No need for all that firewood mess and cost!
Well I don't use a lot of things but I do enjoy having them. There's not enough time in my day to use every feature that our house has. And it does get cold in NC. If Austin, Texas has temps in the 20s during winter, I'm pretty certain that NC does too.
And I don't let mosquitoes ruin my outdoor fun. Two ceiling fans do the trick, along with bug spray, and/or a light jacket and long pants.
We have a fire pit here in northeast Texas and we use it often during the fall and winter. It's supposed to be used during cold weather (when you wouldn't have to worry about mosquitos anyway).
But as for mosquitos, we started having The Mosquito Authority come and spray our yard about once every three weeks starting in the spring and going through the fall, and we have literally zero mosquitos in our yard, which is great considering we live across the street from a running creek - and we live in a naturally hot, humid place. Before we got this service, we did have a mosquito problem, but we're porch sitters and there was no way I was going to put up with that bidness. BUGS, BEGONE!
So, they just come and spray with portable sprayers? Hmm. I always though Mosquito Authority installed the systems that sprayed every X hours or whatever but remained permanent installed at your house.

Maybe they do both, I don't know. The service we have with them is where they just come out once every three weeks for about 30 minutes max and they spray the entire yard, paying special attention to bushy, wet areas.
It works GREAT. I literally haven't seen or felt a mosquito in my yard for two years.
