Am looking for really innovative ways to get more storage in the kitchen, which is so small I can almost stand in one place and touch all 4 walls.
I have two saucepans and one frying pan hung up on hooks on bottom of the upper cabinets, my cooking utensils are in a huge countertop container, all the food is in the hall cabinet, the microwave sits on the dining room buffet, where I also store the silverware. Am pretty sure the dishwasher was an after-construction retrofit because there are now no lower cabinets for storage (hence storing the dishes in there). I don't even have the requisite 5 inches necessary for a pullout between the fridge and the wall or stove.
I am going to have the microwave built in over the stove at some point in the future so that problem can be ignored, and I do have one small wall space under a pass thru where I can take a 30" maximum lower cabinet, and I'm going to do that, too, to give me some countertop space and some lower cabinet storage.
The only thing left that I can think of is to hang more things on the wall, and/or magnetize them to the fridge wall, which butts right up to the stove.
Lost roses, I think they took the only lower cabinet there was and put a dishwasher in there. The only other space I have is below the sink and that is now full of my cleaning supplies, dishpan and drying rack. That is why I am looking to use that 30" of space under the pass-thru and put one in there.
I would remove the dishwasher and put a proper cabinet in there. Washing dishes by hand isn't that horrible. And you apparently need storage space. You could do more with a cabinet than with a dishwasher.
I have a pretty small kitchen but honestly I am having a hard time picturing yours based on your description. Do you have any actual dimensions?
My kitchen can barely fit two people. On one side, there is a sink, a DW (18") and a stove. I used to have a 24" stove and a 24" DW which I swapped when we fixed up the kitchen a bit.
On the other side is just two cabinets worth of counterspace and a refrigerator.
Yes, putting an over-the-range microwave helped tremendously. I actually hadn't had a microwave in about four years before we did that. We also have 40" overhead cabinets for storage purposes. Things I need daily are kept on the lower shelves and I'm tall enough that I can reach some things on the upper most shelf but otherwise, I keep a step stool right there. Your kitchen sounds even tinier than mine.
There are some things you can use for hanging or wall storage. Look around on The Container Store website.
