the inner measurement, the same as the shade size, is 58 inches across.

When I look at packaged curtains, I have seen "60 inches across".

I assume that is measuring the area that curtain would actually cover --?

So for my window, I will need something like 66 inches or more for curtain?

thanks.

You more than likely - without knowing exactly what you want (sheers, panels, etc) - would buy 2 panels.

I'm getting the black-out drapes.
I don't think I would want 2 of the 60 inch,- that would be 120 inches of curtain.
maybe 2 of the 40 inch.
I don't care if there are pleats or not.
my question maybe was not clear.
I was trying to ask how do I measure for curtains.
if I measure the size of the window (which in my case is 58 inches across) or if I measure where the curtains would go - probably the latter

Depending upon how full a look you want, the general rule of thumb is to double the width you want to cover.

You should measure where you would like the curtains to go, usually about 4 inches wider than your window and at least 6 inches longer than the sill.

for a window that is 58 inches wide I would measure 66 wide so you would need at least 2 panels of 60 inches wide for coverage.

40 inches wide IMO would look like you skimped and went cheap.
