My husband and I are looking to move to the outskirts of Atlanta, GA. We are from a different state. We love so many of the homes. The only major issues for us are that so many of the homes have "pattern designed" ceilings. Does anyone know if this started and ended in certain year(s)?

I'm assuming you're referring to "popcorn ceiling"- it's still used today. And it's a pretty sure bit that it will still be used for the foreseeable future.

Before "popcorn" there was "stippled". This technique was done with a brush- the result would be a continuous "pattern" of little stalagmites.

Both of these finishing techniques were used to save time and money in production building. Higher price-point homes will have smooth ceilings.

I assume you're talking only more Modern with that comment? My home, which was built for the town mogul (owned several businesses, several buildings on the main street, etc...) has stippled ceilings with fancy designs. Starburst in the dining room, sweeps and designs in the main entry room (parlor? it's our living room now) and more standard stuff in the kitchen/bath/bed rooms.

Ceilings are all plaster.. as are the walls.

Drywall ceilings? Yeah, I'll agree... easy to not finish the tape lines and just texture over it.

The OP was specific about the ATL area- I've been building/remodeling in the metro area for almost 30yrs.- so I kinda know what's going on around here.

All I can think of is the house I grew up in (my dad built it) - there was a "pattern" in the ceiling, kind of half circles/swirls (if that makes sense?) - when I was young I used to look at it and it made me think of rows upon rows of baby cribs. Haven't seen that type of thing done anywhere I've ever lived since.

First off, I never questioned if you knew what you're talking about, so un-bunch yer panties.

Second, you didn't answer my question. Nevermind that I'm only 40 miles south of ATL, not exactly outside the realm of areas built up by folks based in ATL.

Are you referring to ONLY modern homes with drywall ceilings?

I bought a home in TN and it has a swirled ceiling pattern made by dipping a rag on the ceiling when the paste is wet. MY house was built in the 1970's.

There are a few types of "patterns" or "textures." The most common being popcorn stipple. This is old fashion and most of the newer homes these days are going to "knockdown" texture. I'm not sure what it's like in Atlanta, but here the knockdown look is the modern way to go. If you want to know what some look like, feel free to check out my website.

Cheers and Good luck!
