Eventually we plan on replacing our first floor carpet with wood flooring. My wife wants wood installed on the kitchen floor , but to me that seems like an accident(s) waiting to happen. I need some support on this one. Help!!

Sorry I'm with your wife. Wood floors are the preference where I live, a very hot real estate market, and they are brilliant in the kitchen. Better on your feet, incredibly beautiful, easy to clean and surprisingly durable.

Big fan. Tile is hard on you feet, knees and back. Wood is fabulous. Wifey is right.

Wood is my vote also, for all the reasons the two posters above already mentioned. Plus, if you happen to have an open concept living/dining/kitchen area that makes it all the better regarding the flow. Also OP, what are these "accidents" you speak of?

yep, me too. Current house has wood floors in kitchen and I like it much better than tile in previous homes. I do have anti fatigue mats in front of range and sink though.

I've had wood in my kitchen for 20 plus years. Another vote to follow your wife's preference on this. I'd never use tile in a kitchen. The grout needs to be sealed and still gets dirty and gross.

You and your wife could look at the porcelain wood tile to see if you both like it for the kitchen floor. We have engineered wood floor at home and planed to have wood floor in the kitchen as well until our washing machine in the laundry room leaked water flooded the floor, water leaked thru the wall got underneath the wood floor outside. Our open floor plan has no mercy either so, The floor needed to be replace since it has no stopping point. ( except bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen) what a nightmare that was. So, when we renovate our kitchen recently, we stick with tiles. It could be pretty and all if you done it right.

I 've posted my kictehn before and after here.

The truth be told if you have a major leak, the water will most likely infiltrate the board beneath (no matter what you have) and it will have to be taken up.

Yep. Grout isn't waterproof.
