Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I've heard that adding hardwood to stairs can get crazy expensive.
It's the labor. Materials wise maybe 100 sq ft.
We were quoted $100/step at the one place. To me it is the same cost as re-carpeting the second floor and stairs. So if I keep the old carpet upstairs, and install wood on the stairs it's about the same price.
Downstairs will be Engineered Wood, a medium hue Hickory. Upstairs will remain carpet.
A flooring installer suggested installing wood on the steps. Currently they are carpeted with the same carpet as upstairs.
From the main floor, I love the idea. The staircase is open with metal ballistairs and prominent from the entry way (not walled off)
But I wonder if it would look silly to walk up wood stairs onto carpet.
So for now our choices are,
1. Put wood on the stairs. Keep the old carpet upstairs and replace it in a few more years.
2. Carpet the stairs and entire upstairs now.
Budget-wise it's a wash. The upstairs in the "teen domain". They don't care. The carpet on my stairs is very worn out and looks bad. So I either replace it with wood to match the first floor or entirely carpet to match the 2nd floor.
Presently we have wood on both floors and the stairs. The wood stairs make me extremely nervous but I do like wood everywhere except the bedrooms.
In the home we are building, we will have wood on the main floor, carpeting on the stairs and carpeting on the second floor. This works best for our family.
I walk around barefoot so I like carpet. My mother has laminate flooring on the stairs and I don't care for it.
I agree and there is the noise that concerns me too. Who want to hear every move someone else makes in house?
As for the upstairs I have a dog and purchased new carpeting designed for pet owners. I liked it so much I actually covered the downstairs with it and glad i did!
This was the first winter and my dog liked it so much actually prefered to sleep on the floor now instead of her bed! Go figure!
Depends if you want to hear your kids upstairs or not, your call.
Might try one room with the wood and see if you can live with the racket they make. Otherwise purchase new carpeting with the best padding and enjoy the silence!
