Thanks everyone! Good ideas to think about. It is a secondary fireplace for us. Our living room fireplace thankfully does not have these shelves. I will look into a quote for drywall and door options and see what they say.

You could also look into one of those pictures that drops out of the ceiling but I suspect that would be quite expensive. They're really cool though!

I'd call my handyman and tell him to figure out how to take them out! Then I'd have his drywall buddy repair any damage, and paint.

What would you be storing in it? Are there specific things or is it the idea of storage? If it would truly be functional space, I'd get another quote or two, and then save up to put doors on. If you don't really need the space, then go with dry wall.
