I came across old photos of a rustic rental house I lived in a few years ago. I needed to furnish it as inexpensively and as fast as possible. Other than the coffee table, none of this was "investment furniture". I could not paint or change anything. We had to work with the rustic elements without going off the deep end, in case the furniture ever needed to be moved to a non-rustic house. And we wanted it simple, simple, simple.
None of it is my personal taste, but it was fun to throw together as an experiment in decorating with constraints and under pressure.
I like it quite a bit. The furniture and decor don't overshadow or distract from the rustic character of the house. Rustic decor might easily have resulted in campy.
Frankly it's a nice change from the trend of over-thought and over-decorated. Very peaceful. And easier to maintain as well no doubt!
Macie's Mom, you'll be amused to know that I've been away this weekend celebrating my dad's 80th birthday at . . . wait for it . . . a rustic cabin chock-a-block full of bear, deer, elk, moose, pine trees, antlers, canoe and fishing-themed decor from floors to ceilings, and everywhere the eye landed.
One of dad's birthday balloons popped on a deer's antler.
I think the owners bought all the "Welcome To Our Cabin" signs on the planet and put them in their place. I was welcomed at the front door. I was welcomed in the kitchen. I was welcomed in the living room. I was welcomed in the game room. And I was welcomed in my bedroom.
But!!! Judging from the comments left by other guests at the cabin, people eat that stuff up with a spoon! They want PROOF beyond a shadow of a doubt that they're in the mountains. No doubt, it feels fun to them.

Yes, I'm not usually a fan of theme decorating - a little can be charming but it doesn't take much to overdo it.
I find too much "stuff" in a room - be it tchotchkes, patterns (rugs, upholstery, wallpaper) or whatever, can drain me. Where to look? Some meaningful pieces - absolutely; a bunch of "stuff" one has purchased for no reason other than "decorating "- meh, not for me. The older I get, the less I want lol.
I really like the sofa and chair!
Actually, I really like the house itself.
