I also hate clutter. In fact, all the rest of my counters are empty (except for the toaster oven and knife block), so if I left the island empty, it would look like nobody lived there.
Same here, my counter tops only house what I use daily, juicer, french press, tea kettle and Vitmix and a large bowl that has mixed fruit we use daily, otherwise everything put away, to me a kitchen all about food. I want things clean and easy clean up, so I'm not into clutter! Hubby cooking below ..

I am loving the bowl of fruit ideas, especially the cylinder of lemons! For some reason, I love a good lemon motif. One of my favorite bags had lemon print all over it- fun, clean, summery, simple, just reminds me of good things. How long do lemons keep? lol

Quite a while. Funny story - a few years ago I couldn't find artificial lemons that looked realistic so I bought real lemons, then when I found the good quality fake ones I added them. Put all the lemons away for the autumn and when I took them out again in the spring realized I also stored away the real lemons. They do not keep 6 months that for sure.

I too have a very attractive bowl which I try to keep filled with fruit.
And then of course, we have random bits of mail or important papers......and car keys etc.

I like these! Functional and not cutesy.

However, I have ample counter space, and i simply use one of those Polish pottery bowls to put bananas in, and I leave it on the counter.

When I cook, I seem to take up the entire island, and for me, leaving it clear except for the cutting board is the best solution. I like my knives in a drawer.

If I had the money, I'd have my island redesigned and made over. It is not as functional as I'd like it to to be. But I like having an island. I've never had one in a kitchen before, ever.

No island here- but...

I did see in a custom build in FL that had a pretty massive island with a raised center well for plants- 10' ceiling with skylight directly above. The well even had a drain- watering was easy; the prep sink (in island also) had pull-out sprayer.

Wow! You can do anything with enough money and a good designer!
