I just put drapes in my dining room, and I hung them so they sort of pool on the floor instead of just meeting the floor - I love this look, but my girlfriend keeps telling me I've hung them wrong.

I realize both ways are fine, since I've seen them both ways, but what do you prefer?

Kristy,

The trick to hanging drapes is to use them to make the room look larger and brighter. I make sure the curtain rods extend well beyond the edge of the windows, so the open drapes hang beside the window, not in front of the window. This lets in a lot more light and makes the windows look larger. I also hang the drapes 6"-12" higher than the top of the window. This gives the appearance of a taller ceiling. I personally like my drapes to barely touch the floor, but not pool on the floor, but that is up to each individual's taste. I've seen rooms where drapes collected on the floor and it looked very elegant.

Sandy

I've noticed that a lot of the pictures shows the curtains that drape on the floor and they look nice. I could see me doing it and it would look like I just bought too much fabric . I would wonder about dust bunnies or my dog rolling around on them or my kids running around them and tear down the whole curtain and all.

Depends on the room, fabric(s) and overall look you're going for. If the room has a more formal look, then I like when they puddle. If it's a casual room, then I like them to just touch the floor.

I have silk drapes with a puddle in the Dining Room and Bedrooms. Our family room has heavy cotton drapes, so they just touch the floor.

The draperies in question are gold silk with embroidered edges, and they are in my very formal dining room. I like the pooling look.

Unfortunately - pooling for me would have 4 cats sleeping on top of the pooled fabric, or underneath the pooled fabric! Less elegant by far!! However, it would be my preferred look.

Practicality for us - and the animals - means hang them about 1" shy of the floor.

The house I'm in now (I'm overseas and rent) has long drapes that pool on the floor. It drove my mother crazy when she came (she's of the generation where curtains are accurate). As a visual, they are cool being too long. But... yes, the dog does get tangled in them. Also, the hide the heaters (which are under the windows) and I have to pool them on the windowsill in the winter to keep the heat circulating.

My dogs would surely make a dog bed out of them!

I love the pooling look myself. My dogs would yank them down (or chew on them). I have one dog that LOVES the TASTE of tassles. If the room is very formal I say go for it.

I tried that look. My cats always curled up on the pooled curtains and almost tore them down. It looks nice, but isn't practical in my zoo-like atmosphere of a house.
