I've been really enjoying the new (well, newish) HGTV series, Good Bones. Mother and daughter team who renovate fixer uppers in the Indianapolis area. I find the mother & daughter very engaging, as well as their whole team, and they really seem to know what they're doing (at least from my lay-person perspective). I don't always like their decorating choices, but the renovation transformations are pretty stunning.
I like Good Bones as well. I enjoy the renovations, but I also like how they emphasize other local businesses, parks, etc., in Indianapolis. Indianapolis was never high on my list of places to visit, but I'm more interested in spending a weekend there now due to how it is portrayed on the show.

Well said. You need to keep in mind the purpose of these type shows is entertainment with a dash of suggesting/teaching DIY creativity. Think of the exposure that a show like Tiny House is getting. The Beachfront Bungalow realtors traffic. The house is wonderful. It is all about the sell.
I liken it to looking at a brand new house. You go into the model and are wowed. The price is great, the finishes are great and you are in love. Until you find out that every inch of that model is an upgrade and every screw, nut and bolt in it is considered an upgrade. The house you buy is often a shell of the model you look at
when all is said and done.
Like all "reality" shows there is a bit of truth in it.

Honestly, I think most people realize this. I'm not stupid. I'm not watching this show and thinking that I'm going to run out and buy decrepit houses thinking that I will do the same. Of course it's entertainment. It doesn't mean that I can't appreciate the transformation and the ideas and skills that they bring to the project.
I swear some people on this board want to make those of us who enjoy watching HGTV feel like we're idiots. Lighten up!
I enjoy watching Good Bones for the most part. However, on this week's episode I was absolutely appalled that they wouldn't keep the original windows of the house, which really contributed to the appearance. Yes, the original windows are less energy efficient, but storm windows would have solved that issue. And yes, I also realize that the duo are house flippers, but it still galls me that they will go out and buy antique bits but then discard the antique bits that are already present. OK, rant over.
