Any suggestions for what to do with old 5x7 and 8x10 rugs?

Trash collection wants money to take something that size, and they have limits as to how often I can put something out like that (plus I hate the idea of throwing out something that can still be used).

Local thrift stores and places like Goodwill won't take them because we have pets (and they are no longer allowed to take things that might have collected pet dander).

They are too beat up to sell, but someone might want them for free. They don't have stains or tears, so basically look ok (if you don't look too closely, LOL). Do you think a local theater group might want them? Any other ideas

Have you tried posting them on the free section of craigslist?

Cut them up so they fit the trash bin.

Throw them away at an apartment complex dumpster?

Offer them to your local animal shelter. They won't mind pet dander.

I had to laugh at the suggestion about cutting them up to fit in the trash can. But that actually makes pretty good sense if they are stained or smell bad.

If they are still in good shape though, you may try putting them out on the side of the road with a big sign painted on plywood and propped up next to them that says "FREE RUGS -JUST TAKE ONE OR BOTH." Something like that.

I've done that a couple of times in the past and I swear it was like vultures came and just took EVERYTHING. And fast too.

I like the idea of donating them to a theater group. Along those same lines, maybe a school would have a use for them? (Maybe not in a classroom due to the pet dander, but you never know.) :-)

When I converted from wall-to-wall carpeting to refinished hardwood floors, that's basically what I did with the carpet. Used a very new/sharp hooked carpet knife, cut the carpet into two foot wide sections, rolled them up to the size of fire logs, tied them with twine to keep them from unrolling, and put them on the curb for trash day. No problems or complaints from the guys on the garbage truck.

I did this too. I had an 8x10 and a 9x13. I just flipped them over and cut them with a utility knife. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I did them in strips that were small enough to roll up and tie with twine and then put them in the trash can. Both rugs had suffered hopeless damage from my elderly dog as his health was declining. No issues with the trash guys at all.
