If you plan on redoing the area later when you have more cash, I would consider an area rug for the interim.

I am still concerned about the level difference too. We will definitely extend hardwood floors throughout the kitchen

We decided to do it right after discussing all alternative options. extended hardwood through entire kitchen.

Any good hardwood floor installer can add that hardwood and mix in the old and new planks so you can't tell where it was added, and stain the new to match the old. (Assuming it's actually real hardwood flooring.)
