Bedside tables are important for me and we recently purchased two larger (36" W) bedside chests with 3 drawers each for more room. We use the surfaces for lamps, books, tissues (1 box on each side), eyeglasses, glasses of water, chargers, and clock radio for hubby who refuses to give it up. The drawers provide a place to dump the clutter if it gets to be too much on top. Our bedroom space is large so there is plenty of room. I love having the larger surface and I love having drawers so that everything isn't out collecting dust.
That is the plan, sort of.
Chests with drawers are better because you don't have to clear off everything to open them.
As it is, I have gone back to a method I used in the apartment of getting a toy box with a lid and no drawers. It was cheaper and easier to get a hold of. I had one in the apartment (and a rolling file cabinet bought on sale) but neither made it out in Operation WHIRLWIND. As it was in the apartment, this first toy box is destined for the years of my smaller race tees. They are in wonderful shape of not being worn in the years when I was bigger.
The plan is to have one along one wall as the last unit of the dresser complex but I might put it against the window wall as a unit of the camphor chest complex. A "vision" places a set of steel shelves in that dresser complex space as a place for stuffed animals to go. Two advantages to that is that first, if the shelf set is dedicated to entirely stuffed animals, more can go on there (and I am not desperately searching for space where they can go).
Secondly is that if that shelf unit is in a less approached corner, that shelf is less likely to become the dumping point for non stuffed affairs. Just for information sake, I have stopped actively adding to the stuffed animal collection. It is HUGE and the reasons of before are no more.
Back to the window wall. I am reluctant to hide my windows behind permanent features. First of all, to do so denies me an escape route. Secondly, why have windows if they are going to be hidden behind shelves? The latter is another lesson I hope I have learned from the apartments of when I have too much stuff.
Others on C-D have said that with a forest around, I don't need to worry about people looking into the house through by windows. Still, to fulfill that sense of privacy, I use floor screens. My lace curtain days were left in the 90s and with cats, they probably would not have been possibly, anyhow.

I am much for using as much as possible old things, so I do have an old clock radio. Its use is more just to have a clock visible from bed than for its radio but, that too, still works. It is on my grand aunt's secretary desk, under the flat screen, which serves more for music than a TV to watch in bed. That "complex" is in an alcove which would work for a standing dresser but my long dresser didn't fit there.
For me, so many things of "this kind of life" comes from what I see in the movies or what I dream that I've seen in the movies that it could drive my furniture selection. Ie, for this issue, it is Pierce Brosnan as he was in "Nomads" in bed with Patricia Charbonneau (mix and match, mind you). Hence, it is not a glass of water to take to bed, but a glass of wine. It is a nice "image".......but with my rushed, detox clock life, it is so often just not there.

about 1.5 years ago, that is something of a risk for things don't get out of those drawers until desperate situations occur.
With your threads about bedside tables and their drawers, etc., and I gather you live by yourself, why don't you just get a nightstand or two, and to heck with whether it looks a certain way?

Well, a number of things.
First of all, I am learning to ask questions because I don't know everything and others input is useful.
Secondly, because I have been alone for years, my input is limited, such as what I've seen on TV.....and we all rather know how much those imaginary worlds influence others, perhaps without a good thought.
Third, when one is a recluse, they can get into certain behavior patterns that perhaps aren't quite the wisest, that perhaps could use the input from others to wake them up. Just look at my Thanksgiving thread about being the wrinkled sibling.
My night stand is VERY important to me. Not only is my clock on it, I also keep my hand fan on it (can you say HOT FLASH?). I also keep a bottle of water, and chapstick. I have a back scratcher, an emery board, & a box of tissues. Just about anything I think I might need in the middle of the night. I don't have a light on it. Hubby has the light on his side.
I can't go without a bedside dresser for containing essentials. My version is antique, inherited from a gg-grandmother, and has three drawers filled with everything from an emergency flashlight to my favorite before-bed reading to intimate items.
I can't imagine reading in bed under an overhead light instead of a lamp on a bedside table. Yikes!
While I don't have a canopy or netting over my bed, I suppose the bed in the middle, sleeping beauty like, sort of influences me to having the light over head. When I'm done, I sort of "body wave up" (not perfectly like I should in dance) and pull that chain.
On another note, found out I had the second set of long boot hooks in the Mistress closet. They are hanging at the end of one of the clothes poles.
