I rent a duplex. I have a walkout double door onto a cement patio. Grass lawn borders the cement patio.
I cannot put anything permanent due to renting. And I want to have something low impact easy on the eyes.

I would like to make a simple awning. Something that butts up to the house and over part of the cement patio.

I am trying to create a space that has shade and will keep it dry underneath when it rains.
Nothing real big. About 8 x 5

Any ideas welcomed and appreciated !

A patio gazebo-

I see people pop these things up on their patios and decks. It's a cheap alternative to a permanent structure and nothing attaches to the house.

This ^^ is your answer. Since it is a rental you will not be able to anchor a canopy to anything to safely hold it and support it. The only other alternative that I can think of is an offset market umbrella.

Thank you for your replies.

The gazebo you mentioned has crossed my mind.
Although I am thinking it would blow down/get damaged. I live where we get some pretty good summer storms.

That umbrella is nice. I'm trying to figure out how to have a bigger cover area.

Something like this: Shade Sails Canada Product Gallery. The Original. The Best.

Minimal attachment needed. You should be able to attach to your rental easily.

I see these here in Florida and we do get quite the winds sometimes.

The funny thing about that product is the marketing people who don't understand what their customers are looking for. They show picture after picture of the product hanging uselessly overhead while the area where shade was wanted, sits in the sun.

It would. You put it up and take it down as needed.

Anything that will stand up to storms requires anchoring to the house (and ground).
It becomes a permanent fixture which means that you then give to your landlord.

But even if you're willing to give it...
few sensible landlords will want to accept it.

They require anchoring to a roof line or post. I don't think I would allow that if I had a rental.

Re: Your desire to cover a larger area than an umbrella would cover. You have to operate within the constraints that you described. There are different size umbrellas. You would have to use a weighted stand or at the very least sandbags. I had one on my patio and used a weighted stand with no problems. HOWEVER, I always rolled it down if I was not going to be around. Two reasons, regardless of material sun will fade it over time and why leave it up if you are not enjoying the shade. That may not fit with your parameters.
