I too used to watch HGTV on mute!

Oh, is the purpose of the show not to mock the buyers? Huh. Well, I completely misinterpreted that then! I still have fun watching it. It'd actually make a great drinking game.

From the time I was big enough to push a lawn mower I have been mowing. We never lived in houses with small yards. Now I live in the country and I am still mowing away. Yes, we have a tractor, but I choose to mow with a walk behind mower. It is great exercise.

I cannot imagine living in one of the housing developments with postage stamp lawns. Inevitably I will probably move back to the city when I am older. I will be limited in my housing choices because I will still be looking for a large yard. I will get yard service for things I can't or don't want to do.

Right. And they probably use the same "staging" warehouse too. If I see that oversized iron-looking wall "clock", compass rose, or giant letters one more time...

What was cherry wood cabinetry became grey painted cabinetry which is now sterile white cabinetry. You could go snow-blind while standing in their latest kitchens if you take your sunglasses off.

The most common thing I see is that it is a MUST to remove at least one wall, maybe more for a more open space. Also, lets paint some brick. Lets hide the lost art of brick work with hideous white or gray paint.

I used to watch these shows all the time. The reason? I LOVE looking at houses-always have. I remember as a kid, I used to talk my parents into going to open houses-JUST to look at the house-not to buy. (Maybe I was a real estate agent in a former life).

Those people on those shows just drive me crazy. "Oh, I really wanted stainless steel appliances." HELLO!!!! You can always BUY new appliances. Also, with those fixer-upper shows, they always insist on tearing down walls which also drive me crazy. And at the beginning of them where they show them something they can't afford-haven't they seen the show before? Don't they know that the first place they show them they can't afford?

Now, I don't watch those shows but I go to Realty.com A LOT! For no other reason than just to look. I really like looking at the "bargains"-AKA fixer-uppers. But, I really have to be VERY careful because it can be dangerous for me. I found a house in Puerto Rico-when we weren't looking but at the time it did serve a purpose. (Long story.) And I found THIS house that we are living in now. We were not in the market for a new house. I found it, and fell in love with it, and here we are.

I have yet to see a couple who won't be "entertaining" all their friends and relatives on this show. What's really funny is seeing a family with three young kids or a woman who's pregnant with her first looking at these houses and talking about entertaining. Really? After buying and moving into a new house and doing all those changes you want and then having your baby, you're going to do that much entertaining? Pull the other one, it's got bells on it.

I don't watch these shows with the exception of island destination buyers on Travel channel. The other day this couple was looking at $400k homes in Honduras and going room to room nitpicking the slightest imperfection. I'm thinking, you're in a 3rd world country, if you're concerned with stuff like the cabinet handles "clash" with the light fixtures and there's a bit of corrosion on the exterior doorknob, you are **really** going to be miserable there.
