These project threads are my favorites! Why would anyone report it?

I know you've already bought your chalk paint (and your piece is looking great!!).

But I wanted to mention for future reference, for you an others, it is simple to make your own chalk paint in any color under the sun, for much less cost. You just add powdered calcium carbonate and a little water, to paint of any color, any brand. There are lots of "recipes" if you Google, and lots of sources for the calcium carbonate. I bought mine on Amazon for about 12 bucks, I've used it for several projects already, and I still have some left.

It's looking great! A lot of times "upcycling" feels a bit twee, but this is really turning out well.

Today's update: Waxing is hard. I hope it does become a good surface after all this.

Still have more waxing to do.

Hopefully you purchased the right wax for chalk paint, it brushes on, easy but takes time. The first time I made my own chalk paint years ago, Lowe’s had me buy paste wax. THAT was ALOT of work! You can send me a PM if you have any questions.

I did get the correct kind. Going on was easy. Getting it buffed the next day is very tiring. lol

Now I have to ask, what is the advantage of putting on wax as opposed to some other topcoat? I've used brush-on or spray-on clear coats (probably polycrylic something-or-other.) Easy peasy and has lasted perfectly.

Does the wax give a more sophisticated or otherwise better look?

With the different pieces I’ve refinished it depends on a couple of things which protective top coat I use. If I’m refinishing in the winter here I can’t spray due to the cold or just prefer the look of the wax. When I refinished the piano, I could not spray that piece.

Using dark wax on a piece shows detail and gives an antiqued look. The clear spray matte works well too. Just personal preference and some can’t use a spray if doing projects indoors.

Ok, I am officially unhappy with waxing. It doesn't look very good and I'm thinking of stripping it with mineral spirits and coating it with polyacrylic instead.

Yikes, all that work!! I wonder what happened? Usually the wax does not change the appearance of the piece. I sure hope it works out! Keep us posted . . .
