The mirror above the fireplace is the problem. The other one's okay.

I like the neutral palette (usually don't) - I think you need to focus more on *LIGHT* - as in natural light (don't know if you can do a skylight) and lamps and candles.

Also, bring some texture and softness in with pillows.

The only "colors" I would consider would be shiny silvers and or golds.

I think you need more "items of interest" to personalize the space - books, beautiful artistic do-dads, etc.

What? An aviary doesn't do it for you?
Oh, it's called a tchotchke! It's Yiddish for "more S#!T to dust"!

I can’t add anything, except to agree with everyone. It’s not the brown ness, it’s the scale. Lose the mirrors and rearrange the furniture.

What is the purpose of that huge coffee table? It’s not as if anyone can reach it from the seating. Pull the furniture away from the walls and make conversation areas.

If this were my room I'd place a round table in-between the two chairs and put a lamp on it, bring the ottoman over in front of the chairs to serve as a coffee table. Place a tray on the ottoman. Anchor that seating area with a rug. I'd move that floor mirror elsewhere and put a gold and glass sofa table on that wall. Bring over your floor lamp next to the table and put a mirror with a gold or light frame above it. I don't mind the planter by the window but it needs something in it. I'd opt for a real or fake red japanese maple. Lastly, I'd remove the mirror over the fireplace with a piece of art.

Remove both mirrors.

Oval or preferably round mirror over the fireplace. A gilt or other metal of your choice round sunburst mirror would be nice.

Ottoman in front of fireplace. Chairs moved in across from ottoman. All of that on the appropriate sized rug. I like oriental with a red background because they are like blue jeans and go with everything. But, whatever you like pick that first and then decorate around it.

Different smaller coffee table. Probably round works best.

More light. Lamps should be same as the planter color, or sparkly like mercury glass, clear glass, or other metallic.

Bright sandy beige with lots of yellow/white pigmentation on the walls.

Agree with console table where the large floor mirror is now. Possibly a Chinese altar table in a color that coordinates with the rug or a tortoise shell type table.

Mother in law tongues in the planter. Brings life with green and brightness with the yellow band they have.

Replace the ceiling fan when possible. Its dated and its harsh lighting. If possible, see if you can find closed globes for it in the meantime for more subtle lighting. The room seems to need more lighting.

I would also add a large modern art piece over the console table. This room seems to scream eclectic décor to me and calls for timeless classic pieces from all eras. You can also add color and brightness that way.

I agree remove the mirrors they are both too big for the room. The fireplace is beautiful but all you notice is the huge mirror. Its a pretty room, add some red throw pillows , a vase with red roses, it would hive you a bit if color, also a picture over the fireplace that has some red in it.

Some fresh flowers and a plant or two would do wonders.

I really like how you white-washed the fireplace, and your floor is lovely.

There are some really nice suggestions here...getting some good ideas for myself!

What is the room used for? (Or did I miss that?) To me, that seems like an important piece of info.

Add a few bright blue pillows to break up the brown/beige tone.
