I didn't think it was a "cool idea" when one of the houses we bought had an unfinished knotty pine ceiling in the LR. Our solution was to stain it white (instead of painting it) to have the wood still showing in a subtle way. Staining a ceiling is more of a pain than painting since stain is thin. Thankfully it turned out nice. (In that same room the main wall was also knotty pine, but for that we just drywalled it.)
Wood ceilings have been a staple in various styles for aw hile and have always been cool in the right application. I am not however a fan of the current flip/DIY reno look where the finished product just looks like someone took Big Blue/Big Orange engineered hardwood and attached it to the ceiling.
I do hwoever particularly like the mid century modern homes with wood ceilings or bungalows as well. Lots of great old coffered wood ceilings too.
