I’ve lived here 10 years. I moved north to south. Much of the furniture and art I had in my old house did not seem to fit in the new house here in the south.....it seemed too “heavy”. I don’t even remember what furniture I used in my living room originally, but a lot of stuff got sent to The Salvation Army.
So, I have a bee in my bonnet to revamp my living room now. I intend to use what i already have, and just rearrange it. I might add a new piece here or there. Mostly, I have an oriental rug that used to be in my dining room, but it’s too big for most rooms here. I want to use it. I have a white sofa, so I think it will work with it. I might need to recover some pillows and change out some art. I can paint if necessary. I guess I’m just venting right now, but I’ve always believed that everything I like, will go good with the other things I like, so I feel like experimenting.

We reshuffled a friend's house as a prank once in college. Put all his living room furniture in the bedroom. Put his bedroom furniture in the living room. Put his desk in the kitchen. Arranged it all best we could like it was, but in the new rooms.

Nothing wrong with moving furniture and decor around in your house! You very well may decide that you like (for example) artwork on a different wall, in a different room, etc. - same with area rugs. No clue why some think it's madness.
I rarely rearrange furniture in rooms because it seems they were made for the way I put the furniture first time. But you can change the look of the room by moving furniture, art, rugs, etc. and painting. If it makes you happy do it!
You know what I love? Pillows, throws, art and area rugs! You can change the whole look out easily with these things. I avoid most upholstered furniture if the fabric has patterns. I stick with neutrals and leather so I can change the look up quickly.
And I am all for it! If I can't change things up and around, I tend to get bored.
I have always been prone to rearrange the furniture a couple times a year. Why not!? Switch it around, face a new direction, see what things look like from a new perspective. :-)
I know a woman who does this professionally. She's an interior designer who comes in and "redecorates" your house using your own stuff.
The results can be amazing! I tend to see certain spaces and certain pieces "only" for one or two uses, but she has a fresh and creative eye. It's so funny how your own stuff can seem new when it's placed by someone else.

I feel like I’m good at this, except for two huge issues, the placement of the stupid TV, and the stupid and useless corner fireplace. There is also a french door, and the door swing takes up space too. It’s on the list to get replaced with a slider. There are so few furniture arrangement options, but I’ll try to freshen up the art and accessories. I have boxes of collected pottery and lots of art Ive never used in this house. It remains to be seen if I’ll want to paint. The drapes will probably go.
A favorite book on this is “Use What You Have Decorating”. It has good suggestions. Anyway, my beloved rug is coming downstairs, and the pictures and pillows are getting switched out.
I took out an end table (that’s why the picture is not centered) and the old area rug, and steamed the floor. I didnt take a before picture, but I’ll take a few in progress. Of course, your suggestions are welcomed.
