1. Laminate countertops. Inexpensive, durable, new patterns and colors more attractive then before. Keep for 6/10 years and replace for a new look that is back in style.
2. Corian or other brands of solid surface are my real preference but pricey. Here is why I like these countertops.
They go down no matter what the shape or configuration as one solid looking piece. No joints or splices showing. You can have it installed with a coved backsplash for a totally maintainance free counter. You can add the built in Corian sink and your there. No sink lip.
No grout, sealers, caulk, and the surface is bacterially safe. It can easily be maintained and repaired.
A softer, not as cold surface thats enjoyable to work on. In my opinion it's the best choice.
Now as far as the refer goes, Stainless looks OK when it's not full of hand prints and smudges but I will still take "Good Old White". Easy care and timeless.
But then my wife likes white cabinets because she like the lite bright cheery look in the kitchen especially on dark gray rainy days. So there you have it.......Were happy.
I watch "House Hunters" way too much. When people are looking at a perfectly comfortable room and saying, "We'll need to update that," I don't get it. If it works and it's not very beat up, why change it? And where do people have all this money for renovations when they've just bought a house?
I just shake my head as I watch this show. The people on it are as fake as can be. Nobody really can afford to buy a house for $450,000 and sink $100,000 in renovations into it.
It just goes to show that keeping up with the latest fashions is necessary to be worth anything in society. At least on House Hunters.
A long time ago a neighbor of Mrs. Jones built a mansion in the lower Hudson valley of New York with one Turret. Mrs. Jones added two turrets to her mansion. The other neighbor added three. This wound up being called "Keeping up with the Joneses".
I think the 500k houses with 100k of renovations is a thing of the past. The bubble is bursting and real estate prices are likely to drop to around 2.5 times the mean regional income.
I havent done a kitchen with SS or granite in almost 2 years. Its been done to death!
What I am seeing as an interior designer is more engineered quartz and concrete. Jennair has come out with a line of oiled bronze appliances that are gorgous, I am doing a kitchen right now with them.
In my own home I have antiqued white cabinets with a fleur dis lis in a laurel wreath handpainted in the middle of the panels (upper run of cabinets only), white appliances, and real butcher block counters. Walls are painted a french green, I have a copper hood, and a copper backsplash.
Trend proof, timeless, and since I love to cook, practical!
I keep seeing these sea-foam green, deep burgundy, navy blue appliances in the stores now. So is the new trend the colors. They are prettier colors than the 70's colors were, but still...
2 years ago when I replaced my range, the dealer said they still sold over 50% of the appliances in white - which is what I bought. I don't like SS. It is too soft a surface, scratches easily, stains, and smudges. No thanks.

Your kitchen sounds so pretty, especially the copper accents!
What?! They might go out of style? Well, I'm going to preemptively take mine out back and shoot them. After that, I guess they can go sit on the front lawn, because such lawn furniture will never, ever, ever go out of style.

forgot to mention I have a window over the sink, instead of a window treatment, I have a 1/2 round pot rack with a bunch of copper pots...... that started my copper obsession.....

That would be a major dust collector in my house (note to self: I should really get up & clean everything on my potshelves), especially since we have limerock roads here.
