Any type of rod that's 22 feet in length will need extra support - brackets.

I did something like that using a wooden dowel - much less expensive than a "real" curtain rod - and it was easier to cut to the actual length that I needed. I used wooden brackets and end caps that were made for the carved wooden curtain rods. My curtains were not transparent so there was no need to paint the wooden dowel - but it would be easy enough to do.

I used copper pipe from the plumbing section for a 10' span and it worked really well. There are connectors and end pieces you can use too. I liked the way copper ages so never bothered to paint it. My curtains were not very heavy and it worked great.

Oh I agree. Copper pipe is beautiful when used as curtain rods. Also, as with electrical conduit, you can buy benders.....and make nice curves to the pipes. Hehe.....If you grow tired of the copper pipe, you can always recycle it! How many curtain rods have a trade-in value!? LOL Okay, so you have to go to a scrap yard, but still.....
