I was interested in a house with some unique painting in some rooms. Previous owners seemed fond of stripes, about 1 foot wide. One room had deep purple and beige, the other bright red and black. One is 20X12 the other 15X12. How much will it cost to get these repainted to a 'normal' blue or green. Or if I do it myself how many coats will I need?

In a bathroom they have some texture...looks like beading glued onto the walls...suggestions?

As far as the striped walls- sand the surface as is. If you can still feel a ridge- skim with drywall mud and sand smooth.
As far as hiding the present colors- pick your final color, buy enough Kilz (or your favorite primer) to paint the walls (but have it tinted the same color as your final color and apply with a 1/2" or 3/4" nap roller (this will help hide the stripes if they're still creating a ridge. Tinting primer will usually make painting the final color a one coat process.

The bathroom sounds like wallpaper-
get out the steamer and putty knifes, it's gonna be a long night!

I second the sanding the stripes. I highly suggest Kilz. If you use the original Kilz, make sure you have the room well ventilated.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info thus far...I was afraid of that with the bathroom. I have not purchased at this time. I will try to negotiate a couple k down for painting.

Or put it in the contract to have the rooms professionally painted and wallpaper striped.

Default Get it Repainted !

the previous owner must be having a quite funky taste!

You need to get it sanded and repainted as the purple color would show if you directly paint with some other color.

Yes, I think there were some eclectic tastes in the dwelling.
