We recently bought a house with Andersen casement windows that have the crank handles at the bottom of the window. The windows are very nice, but I have no idea what sorts of window coverings will work, because the handles seem like they will get in the way. It is a 20-year old home, and the previous owner had cellular shades (that I hate...they look cheap and don't block enough light) or really icky microblinds, so all the windows coverings will need to be replaced. I like wood blinds, but again, worry about how the crank handles will affect putting new window treatments on. If you have crank handles like this to contend with, or have any good ideas, I'd really appreciate the input. I'm not the decorator type at all...help.
I don't have crank handles but believe you can remove those handles. I really like a bamboo roll-up shade with an inside mount and nubby linen or silk panels. I'd remove the handles if I could.
Home Depot, Lowes, etc. sell a replacement for the cranks. The replacement is much smaller and hardly stands out from the window at all. It's more like a small knob than a crank.
try window shades or roman blind for the window treatment. Am attaching here a few images for you to gather window treatment ideas (http://www.ninaathome.com/images/tb25_large.jpg - broken link).
Both of my sisters have window cranks. My sister in Golden, CO has 2" wood blinds. Yeah the bottom of the blinds don't hang very well around the cranks. The other sister in Albuquerque has those cellular shades that you don't like. Albuquerque is known for intense sun. The cellular shades seem to work well for her and her family. They both had their homes built and love their windows.
Sheridan before I discovered the replacement knobs, I removed all of my handles and just kept one handle near each set of windows so I could open and close them. The handles slip off and on without any work so that system worked just fine. I prefer having the knobs though.
