Just moved into a home that has very beat up wood floors. We want to redo the kitchen but don't want to rush into anything but spend a little time in it before making any big decisions. Is there anything other than rugs that we can do to spruce up the wood floors in the mean time? Can you paint them or something - they're pretty bad so we'll take a chance as they can't look much worse!!! TIA

Try the Rejuvenate line sold at Lowe's and Home Depot. We used it a few months ago on our wood floors that have taken a beating from the dogs. It doesn't deposit color, but it makes the scratches much less noticeable, and leaves a nice shine.

Wooden floor + dogs is surely a recipe for disaster?!

I think it depends on the hardness of the wood. My parents have wood floors and several dogs and don't have a problem with them scratching up or denting the floors. They have more of a problem with the dogs splashing water everywhere from their bowls.

I'd rather have wood flooring over tile or carpet. My house has tile and my poor dog has a hard time sitting still on it without sliding. Carpet sucks up pet hair like a magnet.

If you like the distressed look, but just want a protective coating. Look at Basic Coatings TyKote recoating system. No sanding.

I recently saw Sabrina Soto recommended this on her website.
Howard's Restore a Finish. You can pick it up at the hardware store and it comes in different colors to match your floor.

Yes, there are paints made specifically for flooring. Just like there's polyurethane specifically for flooring.

I'd go with one of teh finishes made to be put over unsanded finishes and follow the instruction . Putting poly over many finishes unless you know what you are doing can be a disaster.

Well, I think I would have sanded before considering putting poly down. Just shining up a beat up floor is going to give you a shiny, beat up floor.
