I think the type and width of crown molding should be selected with the style of the home in mind. What kind of house do you have and about how old is it?

The house is ~ 10 years old, track housing in South CA. 2 stories and attached garage, pretty standard.

Heres a trick to give the illusion of wide crown molding for a cheaper price. After you install your crown measure down 2-4 inches and draw a line. Whatever looks good. You'll know when you see it. Then add a strip of 1" molding on this line all the way around the room. Paint the crown and the wall and the 1" trim all the same color. Use the vinyl stuff. Nobody can tell the difference when its that high up.

Just a thought. Instead of running the crown at ceiling height (18') You could run it at the ceiling height of the adjoining room. Havent seen the room so it might not work.

Back again. Jus found time to go look around and low and behold found a few stores that sell crown moldings only. The room top continues to the second floor top, so a lower setting of molding would not work. The wall spacing of 2" between to runners was a great idea and saw a sample in the store and looked great. The stores had molding up to 11.5". One other suggestion was to have a base molding run under the crown to give it a bit more downward length.
Budget being an issue, we will have to get quotes. Anyone has any estimates on a ft basis for installation only?
